Hamboo is a reed among the five invasive plants in Sri Lanka growing extremely in the marshy riverbanks and meadows mainly in Medirigiriya in the Polonnaruwa district. It has been found that very durable and elegant bags can be produced using the “hamboo” reed- which can substitute the polythene and plastic bags menacing the environment.
To begin with, SAPSRI identified 16 low-income earning women in Medirigiriya and gave a rigorous training in the art of bag making. LAKSALA has agreed to by them in bulk to resale at its outlets in Colombo. Mr. G.Weerasinghe, the Business Promotion officer, has plans to offer some of these bags at Mihinthale during the Poson Festival season as well. In time to come, SAPSRI, steps to develop the “Hamboo” products and designs carefully observing the buyer’s tastes. The prospects of this cottage industry appeared bright.
